Retro-Futuristic Cadillac

For this post, I was inspired by Andy Piatti’s levacar design which I found on Behance. I now follow him. I love his fresh style and very original designs. Every square inch of his artwork is something I haven’t seen before. Check out his work on:

I experimented with putting wheels on his design to see what I could come up with. My interpretation looks more retro than futuristic, however. I stretched the upper like in Andy’s design to produce a one-box concept which would create a large volume in a streamlined shape. I added a front fender that was recognizable on my design to give the car a point of reference to keep the overall design from being too abstract. I wanted my design to be simple but distinctive.

I felt the edginess of the design had a certain Cadillac quality. I used a ‘59 Cadillac badge consistent with the retro theme.

My early versions had a bone in the glass which looked too familiar. I made the glass very tubular with an undercut along the top to get the roof section away from the passengers head. The section breaks up the mass of the bodyside. Obviously, the glass would be distorted when looking through it. This would be an autonomous car, so visibility would be secondary. My last three posts played with variations on a tubular bodyside.

I went through many reference images and many more generated images to get what I wanted. I included the reference image that I used in Vizcom to create the featured image.

This time, I had success with AI videos produced with Runway ML and none with ChatGPT Sora. Sora created very strange shapes on oddly narrow cars. I like how Runway zoomed in on the car as it was rotating.

I recommend generating tons of Vizcom and AI videos to elevate your designs. Let AI give you many choices for you to edit. I still control the direction of my design. Ultimately, it comes down to exercising good design judgement.
