I realize how impractical this design is. Sometimes it’s just fun to loosen up and explore crazy ideas not tethered to reality. My ultimate goal is to create a new car design that is almost not recognizable as a car. I usually don’t get many likes when I share these types of designs, but I have the most fun doing them. I try to achieve the most dramatic designs I can think of, but in the simplest forms possible.
My design board consists of a wide range of disparate influences. I merged my initial sketch with parts of the 2 car designs using Vizcom Workbench. My initial sketch was done before seeing either of them. I adapted their designs to meet my needs for quality surface. As usual, I went back and forth between Vizcom and Photoshop Elements to refine the design. I let Vizcom add interesting details such as the tail lamp and incorporated it into my design.
The glass area is somewhat mysterious. The bodycolored texture offers a clue as to the DLO perimeter. The body-tinted glass acts as a natural solar filter, absorbing heat radiation and maintaining privacy.
I like the soft tubular forms contrasted with the graceful shear edges as depicted from the original sketch and throughout the design process maintaining its minimalist design elements.
I really liked the covered rear wheels in the early sketches. My wife, Marty suggested that the design would look better with uncovered wheels. As usual, she was right!
I had excellent results with Vizcom Animation except that it kept generating videos with the car going backwards. It must have thought the air exhaust feature on the bodyside was an air intake. I couldn’t reverse it in Vizcom, but with a little help with AI, I downloaded CapCut to get the job done. It also gave me the choice to share the video of the car actually driving forward on YouTube.
All of the polished renderings were originally extracted from Vizcom videos by right-clicking the enlarged carefully chosen frames and selecting ‘Copy Video Frame’. I used Photoshop Elements to do all of the rework.
The Mercedes badge was an afterthought. I chose it because I thought it looked good on the decklid.
